About Snehgram
Snehgram, as the name suggests, is a ‘village of love’ for children from backward communities, that has been built with kindness and affection by Vinaya & Mahesh Nimbalkar. They are involved in rebuilding the lives of children who have been orphaned, abandoned or both. They want to give them a safe, secure and positive upbringing. Every child deserves that.
"I was a government school teacher, had always been involved in social work. but there’s one incident that will always stay with me. Mahesh and I were going to Jamgaon village when we saw a boy crying on the side of the road. He didn’t speak to us for a long time. We took him for a meal and after eating he finally told us his story. I still remember him crying and telling us that he was sexually abused. He didn’t have any parents and his grandmother was blind. They had no money and barely anything to eat. Only a mother knows the pain of not being a mother, and I am also a mother. I knew we had to do something."

Vinaya and Mahesh had observed many children belonging to the nomadic tribes from Marathwada and Drought area in and around the Barshi in Solapur, Maharashtra. They were seen begging, stealing, and collecting garbage. Many of them have been abused and come from problematic family set-ups where parents are prisoners, prostitutes, etc. That is when she thought of resigning from the decent job to dedicate her life to giving these children a shot at a better life. Vinaya and Mahesh Nimbalkar started Snehgram Democratic School in 2014 to give these kids the ability to forge their own futures.

Snehgram Democratic School in Korfale Tehsil- Barshi District, Solapur, Maharashtra is no regular residential school. It provides a unique alternative to traditional models of education by offering children a self-directed approach to their learning. Presently, there are 150 students, out of which 50 students stay in a make-shift hostel. Here, the children not only learn academic subjects but also learn valuable lessons about responsibility. problem-solving, social justice, and social interactions.
Every child should get an opportunity of education according to his ability, where there is no stress, no compulsion. He can spread his wings with his creativity. For this, we are trying to make people and enrich the country's democracy through open education, practical knowledge, field visits and much more.”There are 150 children in our organization, out of which 50 live in the hostel. Every child loves coming to snehgram because it is safe place, where every child is our child. They get childhood who lost in their children because of their difficult circumstances. It is not a hostel or school; it is a safe and loving home, the children has got the confidence due to Snehgram democratic school.

When we started out, we did not have a lot of funds at his disposal to buy land on which they could build the school and affiliated shelters/hostels. When vinaya came to know about this, she sold her wedding jewelry without a moment’s hesitation. Today, Snehgram has expanded and we are taking care of over 50 children - including arranging their food, medical care, shelter and education. There has been an increase in the number of children joining them over the years - and therefore expenses are increasing exponentially. The Snehgram democratic school now need your help to build school building so that many more children can educate there.
